Praise versus Encouragement- Applicable Business and Family Lessons from a Special Educator

11/24/2010

I wanted to clarify the dangers of Praise and suggest why using  Encouragement is better for both parents and business professionals. My beliefs are validated by the research of Dr. Carol Dweck  , an Educational Psychologist from Stanford University .
You might find her website mindset.org and book Mindset helpful for both the family and business environments.

In 2010, I published this  professional development article on my Dr. Brenda E. Abbey  Biznik site. In this article , I pointed out the difference between Praise and Encouragement and how this would be helpful in building an entrepreneur's social intelligence assets.
I was excited to initially  have my article picked for the Biznik Weekly Hot Article list and  as of the  SUMMER 2014  it remains popular for parents and business**  having been read by over  6200 people.

You can read the entire article by visiting the link below.
I would welcome your thoughts.

I originally wrote this article in 2010 and it now has had over 4000 people who have read it. I feel it is important to share research and knowledge through writing articles on topics for professional development , even when you do not get paid for it. I am passionate about writing and sharing my lifelong learning on a variety of topics.
Knowledge is a legacy we can leave and hopefully my writing and research will contribute to a range of professionals as well as make a difference for parents and their children.

As I am reading some interesting research by Dr. Carol Dweck and visiting her website mindsetonline.com , I am feeling encouraged about informing both parents and business professionals about the pitfalls of Praise as a growth and motivation strategy.

While I wrote my professional development article Praise versus Encouragement 3 years ago , the distinction still has powerful applications in a variety of social interactions and settings.

I also would suggest the article called The Talent Myth is worthwhile reading for encouraging a powerful change in organizational design.
